First ever Yourstage theatre trip a rocking success!
It was a night we’d been looking forward to for so long, Thursday 19th October. Our first ever Yourstage group trip to see ‘School of Rock.’ So perfectly and yes deliberately timed with our Rock Stars themed term. Yourstage has been running children’s drama classes for many years, but this was the first time an official trip to see live theatre had been arranged. We are great believers that drama students really need to see live shows as part of their overall theatre arts education so it was about time we did it.
We met at the station at 6pm and from there headed to the theatre, a group of twelve children and four adults. We arrived at the theatre on Drury Lane in perfect time, early enough to buy programmes (we had a surprise in store for the children but did not let on at this stage), but not hanging about so long before the show started that the children started to get impatient.
We had fantastic seats in the stalls and the show captured us all from the opening rock band scene right to the end. It was a late night for the children – there were three 6 year olds amongst the group but most of the children were 8 and above. Late for a school night, but deliberately time with only one day of school to get through afterwards before the start of the half-term holiday!
The show was every bit as good as the hype and the children enjoyed being together with their Yourstage friends to see it. The children of all age groups in our Ealing drama classes have had a great time this term already with the Rock Stars theme, although we aren’t actually doing the School of Rock production (our own bespoke Rock musical will take place on Saturday 2nd December).
If you read our blog articles regularly, you might have seen that we featured a Yourstage interview with one of the cast members, Miami Holness a while back. Well, Miami’s mother very kindly arranged for our Yourstage group to meet some of the cast members including several members of the child cast AND leading male adult character, Mr Dewey Finn after the show! Yourstage children were all over the moon to be able to get their programmes autographed and even speak to some of the cast members and ask them questions. A really unforgettable experience for our drama students to see such a slick West End show, combined with meeting some of the cast as well.
The children were excited and full of beans on the journey home but were all brilliantly behaved. It was a very late night, especially for the younger ones but we think you’ll agree it was well worth it for the memories it created alone!
